Artie Yellowhorse, Navajo
A gorgeous cabochon of natural Pietersite/Pietercite consisting of abstract sections of deep brown/gold and heavily fibrous chatoyant light golds, olives, and greys. It displays the incredibly difficult silver twist and burst dot work, all of which is hand done.
This is one of my favorite stones but Artie rarely has much on hand when I am in New Mexico (I prefer to choose my own pieces). This summer I was able to pick through a tray a raw stones. I had them make six pendants and two cuffs for me. (The cuffs are gone). I've since had them make a few more but they have disappeared pretty fast.
First found in 1962, there are only two known sources of Pietersite in the world, Africa and China.
It's really tough to photograph accurately because it color shifts in every variation of light. The accompanying photos show the piece under a variety of light conditions. Unfortunately the beauty of the chatoyance cannot be adequately represented.
I've NEVER had someone tell me the pictures of Pietersite looked better than the item.
