Andres Quandelacy, Zuni Fetish Artist - Zuni Pueblo, New Mexico Native American Zuni Fetishes
Andres Quandelacy's work is instantly recognizable to those familiar with it. He is particularly noted for profiled mountain lions with the tail curled on the back, wolves, and bears all with heart lines.
This piece utilized a stone variously known as Appaloosa, Wild Horse, and Crazy Horse due it's mottled brown and white appearance. I don't know the geological name(s) for the stone. I suspect a number of different rocks masquerade under these monikers for use in Native American and "southwestern" handicrafts. I've seen it listed some places as "Magnesite" but, based upon my readings, I don't think so. By whatever it may be called, it makes for an appealing carving.
Andres is a sibling of noted carvers Stewart, Faye, and Sandra Quandelacy among many others. According to Kent McManis' book; Zuni Fetishes and Carvings, all members of Andres generation (11 all tolled) are carvers.
This is a very nice piece of "Appaloosa", the right side looks almost like clouds floating on the bear. Andres has added both Turquoise eyes and heart line.
Remember to check the dimensions - the photos are extreme close-ups.
Unsigned - this is normal for Andres.
