Mary Tom (Mary Lou Tom), Navajo Jewelry - Arizona, USA
Award winning artist (most notable recent was a First for necklaces at Santa Fe 2018). Beautiful handmade set, signature design of artist.
Absolutely stunning set, photographs are a poor representation. I purchased one of these in early fall and just couldn't part with it, I kept it for myself.
This features (5) Scalloped rounds, one of which is larger than the others. Each Scallop is topped with a hammered silver oval with an oval of lapis inset. The necklace is comprised of (36) oval beads (2) straight flutes, and (2) tapered flutes, and lobster claw hook. Earrings are duplicates of (2) of the scallops with lapis.
The perspective photo is using a one dollar Sacajawea coin.
This set is a bit different with each she makes.
Mary's is instantly recognizable, having won many awards and been featured in multiple books on Native American jewelry.
You will often see her name in association with her former husband Jack, they have worked totally independently since 2011. Mary virtually sells out at Santa Fe Indian Market each year- VERY IMPRESSIVE when you consider there are 900 to 1200 other artists from whom people could purchase.
She is the younger sister of the late great Stephen Begay and the older sister of Nelson Begay. Mary and Stephen helped Nelson learn silver work and he is carrying on many of Stephen's and some of Mary's designs.
Mary is a lovely person, great fun. She loves a good laugh and going to see her grandchildren compete in basketball matches. During the Prescott show in '17, I had the pleasure of introducing Mary, Nelson and his wife, Mary to EAST Indian food. A great time was had by all. I so look forward to seeing her each trip.
