Michael Kirk, Isleta/Navajo Jewelry New Mexico, USA 1949 -
Spectacular, eye-popping work from Michael Kirk. It is a striking design, definitely a statement piece. This is part of a "feather series" he has made for years. I have some other sizes I will be posting.
This shape is referred to as anticlastic. which is defined as having opposite curvatures at a given point. A few other artists with whom I work have made anticlastic pieces for me.
It is made of Argentium Sterling Silver. Argentium .935 is a purer silver than standard Sterling at .925. It has more silver, less copper, and the addition of germanium which greatly reduces fire-stain and tarnish. This results in a much brighter piece. If you like dull, don't buy Argentium. Most artists don't use it because it is more expensive.
Michael started making jewelry in 1971 after returning home from service in Vietnam with the USMC. (Sempi Fi, Michael) He learned from and with his older brother, the late great Andy Lee Kirk (1947 - 2001) with whom he collaborated at times. His list of awards is very impressive. Much of his work runs into the multiple thousands of dollars so it is nice to have some price accessible pieces.
Both his daughter Elizabeth and his niece Melanie Kirk-(Lente) are active jewelers.
