Javier Martinez -(Hector Javier Martinez Mendez) Mata Ortiz/Casa Grandes Mexico
Entirely handmade (NO wheel), this piece is stunning in it's detail and execution. Polished terra cotta finish base with detailed scraffito flowers & butterflies. I was real tempted to keep this one for myself, if it sits around too long, I still may.
Javier has won major awards in Ceramica competitions in Mexico. In addition to this design he is renowned for his Day of the Dead scraffito pots.
Unfortunately availability of Mata Ortiz pottery has been impacted by the drug wars but some is still getting through. I was going to go down in 2013 but decided discretion is the better part of valor and left it to others to do.
